Our History

Martindale Friesian Farm began back in 1994 when we purchased our first Friesian filly. After admiring the beautiful breed in photographs and then finally visiting Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY to view a Friesian in person, we felt there was no other horse in the world that could compare to the Friesian's beauty. So we purchased Enya D. as a yearling in 1994 from Wonderland Friesians in Michigan. Until that point, the only horses on our farm were our daughter's Quarter Horse gelding and a Welsh Pony mare.
In 1996 we bred Enya to the stallion Gerlof for a July 1997 colt. During Enya's pregnancy we purchased our second Friesian filly, Jifke. She had recently been imported from the Netherlands. In 1998 both mares were bred to different stallions. Enya was rebred to Gerlof, due to the wonderful qualities in her first colt, and Jifke was bred to the stallion Ouke.
In January of 2001 we made a trip to the Netherlands in search of one or more ster or high quality mares to join our farm. We ended up purchasing three mares who arrived in the U.S. in February. Famke, Mieke, and Mirthe arrived at our farm in March. All three mares were in foal at the time with Dutch stallions.
In the spring of 2002 we had three beautiful fillies born on the farm; Hattie, Izzey and Ivy. Hattie now lives in Massachusetts and Izzey and Ivy have grown into gorgeous 2 year olds here on the farm. In the spring of 2003 we had only one foal born on the farm. The foal was a filly who we named Lilly. Lilly is a full sister to Hattie and she is stunning.
In 2003 we sold three of our mares. Enya, Mieke and Deacon (Mirthe's 2001 colt) are all living in Eastern Canada and Mirthe is in North Carolina. Each of the mares had fillies for their new owners.
In July of 2003 we made another trip to the Netherlands where we purchased two full papered ster mares, Martha and Geartsjen, to keep Famke company. We also purchased two stunning full papered 2003 stud colts. They arrived in mid-September and are now completely at home in America!
Each of our ster mares is unique in personality and appearance. Each one has traits that make her special as a broodmare. Our goal is to breed foals that are the best combination of bloodline, resulting in low breeding coefficients and high quality healthy foals that will adapt well to any riding or driving discipline. All of our foals are imprinted at birth and handled daily. As a result they are very friendly, curious, easy to handle and easy to train as they get older. **Our latest addition to the farm is a new barn to house our CEM quarantine facility. After wading through 3+ years of state and federal government red tape our doors will be open for business June 2006. Our quarantine will be the first ever quarantine in the state of Indiana!
